Topic: Southern Pacific Rise Eruptive Accretion Dynamics

Description:

This winter, a team of scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Boise State University, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, investigated the underwater geology of the Southern East Pacific Rise. This part of the ocean floor is where tectonic plates are spreading apart the fastest and new ocean floor is being produced. Examining this part of the ocean bed can help us better answer questions such as, How is Earth’s outer layer made? How do volcanoes work underwater? Why is this process different in some places than in others?

During their talk at the Ocean Institute, members of the Scripps team will share their data and adventures! They will discuss life at sea, what it’s like going down in the Alvin submarine, how they map the ocean floor, and why it all matters. They will also be bringing physical samples collected during their voyage for viewing!
