Paddle-Out Honoring San Clemente Shaper Terry Senate
January 25 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
There will be a paddle-out honoring San Clemente shaper Terry Senate on Jan. 25 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. The paddle-out is scheduled at 1 p.m., and everyone is instructed to bring food for the potluck, as well as a “Senate,” or a board shaped by Terry Senate.
A rite of passage for both the living and the dead, paddle-outs are a ritual unique to surfing and are a special way to honor important figures in the sport. The ceremony involves, as the name implies, paddling out past the breaking waves to gather in a circle as a group, splashing up water, cheering, or chanting to celebrate the life of a surfer, shaper, artist, or otherwise notable figure in surfing.
